The Schenck House - est. 1822

The Schenck House - est. 1822 The Friends of Schenck House Est. 1822 support the 2003 Erie County Master Plan to restore and put into adaptive reuse for the public the "Old Stone House"

The Schenck House was build by Pioneer and Farmer Samuel Schenck and wife Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah did not have the chance to enjoy her new home long; she passed early in 1823. Samuel later met and married Magdalena "Lena" with the two of them living in the Schenck House from the 1820s - 1880s. Their daughter Susannah and Sarah then inherited the farm. Three of the original six buildings have s

urvived. If you visit the Schenck House the grounds are open to the public but the builds are closed due to the need of restoration. Buffalo and the surrounding area was originally an indigenous persons reservation, with non-indigenous persons settling in the area after the Revolutionary War. The house is made of locally queried limestone where fossils can seen on many of the blocks. The House is built in the Pennsylvania-Continental fashion of three rooms over three which causes the front entrance to be off center. This style is counter to the English fashion of four rooms over four with a center hall causing the exterior to have a center entrance. The three over three room allows for the house to be heated from a central chimney, however, further investigation is needed to determine if there was a central chimney as the central wall which was replaced in the 1970s is only 4 inches wide. Much narrower than a central support wall should be.

Zoom in to see some clothes from the 1860s. Notes that the 1850s huge hoop skirts were out of fashion by this time. Men’s suits were rather snappy too.

The large painting pictured is Joe Josephs' "Elephant Joe's Sign Shop". Josephs, a German immigrant who was a sign painter, political campaigner, and artist in Buffalo, created this painting to commemorate the 1869 opening of his shop.

You can view this artifact and much more on display with a trip to the Museum!

What was happening when the Schenck house was built? Maine and Missouri became the 23rd and 24th states to join the union. It would be great to have the building cleaned, restored and decorated with buntings and flags from 1821 for the Memorial day, 4th of July and other commemorative days.

Number State Joined
23 Maine 15-MAR 1820
24 Missouri 10-AUG 1821

It is May, and every good fundraiser can easily take nine months to a year to plan ahead. Friends of Schenck House will be submitting a proposal to the county to put on a fund raiser with the proceeds to benefit the Schenck House restoration. The goal is a fundraiser with a Spring theme... e.g. tent, apple pie, hard cider and maybe even a 1920s swing band ! The volunteer group will have a lot to brainstorm, do and be proud of... for those interested please let me know below or pm !

It is not often we get to see paintings of people from Western New York. Here are two unknown people, from the Robert Perry estate collection in Orchard Park being auctioned off. His collar is 1820s and her hair is late 1820s and 1830s. There is no artist listed or names for the sitters. But this gives us an example of style in the Buffalo area for the time of the Schenck House.

1860s Buffalo as per the newspaper in the foreground. Note the different fabrics and styles of clothes. The man on the left is wearing clothing that is a little dated and a mariners caps. Though he seems to be carrying a saw on his back. The woman in the far back with the child on her back... Maybe Native American especially since she is not wearing a cap or hat but could also be Dutch or German as they also wore their children like this.

In Young America, Le Clear (American, 1818 – 1882) alludes to the complex racial, labour, political, and financial problems surrounding the Civil War, but softens his message by letting children tell the tale. Each figure in the painting can be associated with hotly debated issues such as immigrat...
