Buffalo Electric Glass, led by Robert Cassetti as interim director, hopes to open the world’s largest electric-powered hot-glass facility inside the historic Inner Harbor [DL&W] building near Canalside, with a goal of exposing more people to the art of glassmaking through live demonstrations, hands-on workshops and artist-led classes in glassblowing.

Cassetti, a 30-year veteran of glassblowing programs who developed a mobile glassblowing initiative, is a former senior director at the Corning Museum of Glass, and founding board president of the new nonprofit.

The DL&W project is a public market, gathering place, and entertainment venue set on the second floor of the historic train terminal and situated at the confluence of the Buffalo River, Erie Canal, and Niagara River, immediately adjacent to Canalside and KeyBank Center.

This week, WGRZ - Channel 2, Buffalo anchors wrapped up a segment on the NFTA’s ongoing efforts at the DL&W Terminal with an observation: it would be great, they suggested, to get people up on the sky deck and ask them what they want to see the second-floor of the terminal become. The idea is well-intentioned, and given the lack of amenities at the waterfront, it’s a reasonable conclusion.

But it also describes something that already happened, more thoroughly and comprehensively, several years ago in accordance with the Pre-Development Agreement between Sam Savarino's DLandW Buffalo and the NFTA.

Savarino DL&W Buffalo LLC's plan for the DL&W's second floor includes a food hall, live music (with both indoor and outdoor venues), a waterfront restaurant, a public market, social gaming, Buffalo Electric Glass, and more—all inside the train shed it obtained historic designation for on Buffalo's waterfront.
