Three companies sit between a family and a mortgage, and they have treated that chokepoint as a license to charge whatever the file will bear. A housing official who calls that arrangement what it is—an overcharge dressed up as infrastructure—is doing the unfashionable work of noticing who actually pays.

Credit files are supposed to reduce risk, not extract a quiet tax from every closing. When the same three names appear on every deal and the fees never fall, the market is not competing. It is collecting. First-time buyers feel it as a higher hurdle; builders feel it as another reason the next house costs more than the last.

Government that exists to make homeownership possible should start by removing the tolls that do not improve the product. Pressure on the bureaus is not a war on information. It is a demand that information stop being a cartel good. Families trying to buy a house already have enough obstacles.
