This is a Zinsco electrical panel, and if you’ve been around older homes long enough, you’ve probably seen the colorful red and blue breaker handles.
The problem with these panels isn’t just that they’re old. Zinsco breakers have a history of poor connections at the bus bars, overheating, melting, and in some cases failing to trip properly during an overload or short circuit.
That’s obviously not what you want from the equipment that’s supposed to protect the home.
Does seeing a Zinsco panel mean the house is about to burn down? No. But it’s an obsolete electrical system with known concerns, and it’s something I’m going to point out every time I find one.
During a home inspection, we’re looking beyond whether the lights turn on. Sometimes the bigger issue is hiding right behind the panel cover.
