Planning to buy a home in California? There’s a tax bill many buyers don’t see coming—supplemental property taxes. At closing, escrow pays property taxes up to the current bill, but that’s based on the seller’s tax rate. After you buy, the county reassesses the property at your purchase price, and you may owe the difference. Depending on how long the previous owner owned the home, that number can be significant. A lot of buyers don’t realize this until that bill shows up. My buyers do, because we go over supplemental taxes early so there are no surprises.
