There are big changes coming to home selling this summer, and while no one is sure exactly how everything will play out, there’s at least a date: August 17, 2024.

That’s the deadline for properties listed on real estate databases called Multiple Listing Services (MLS) to remove an information box specifying how much buyers’ agents will make in commission when the home is sold, the National Association of Realtors said today.

That’s right, when selling your home after August 17th, you can no longer advertise in the MLS how much you are willing to pay a real estate agent to represent a buyer during the sale of your property.

Also starting on August 17th, agents will need a written agreement with a buyer to show them a property and serve as their buyer’s agent.

Mortgage rates soared this week, breaching the key 7% threshold.

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 7.10% in the week ending April 18, up from 6.88% the previous week, according to Freddie Mac data released Thursday. A year ago, the average 30-year fixed-rate was 6.39%.

Breaching 7% represents a psychological threshold that hadn’t yet been crossed this year.

Mortgage rates are climbing based on expectations that the Federal Reserve will no longer be cutting interest rates anytime soon. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, but its actions do influence them. Persistently high inflation is keeping the Fed on hold.
