One of my favorite Labor Day traditions is heading up to Oglebay to see the Annual Woodcarvers Show something I’ve been doing since I was a kid, and something I’ve continued in honor of my dad since he passed. The Woodcarvers Show has been a part of Oglebay’s Labor Day weekend for decades, with roots going back to the late 1970s. A small group of local carvers formed a club in 1976, and by 1979 they began displaying their work publicly. Over the years, the show grew into a major Labor Day weekend event, now held in the Crispen Center (formerly the Pine Room).

Today, the show brings together talented, award‑winning woodcarvers from across West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Visitors can watch live carving demonstrations, browse intricate pieces, learn about tools and techniques, and even enter hourly raffles for locally made carvings. It’s free, family‑friendly, and one of the most unique traditions Oglebay offers.

For me stopping by the woodcarvers isn’t just a fun event it’s a tradition I’m proud to keep alive. The detail, the craftsmanship, the passion these artists put into their work is incredible.
