Happy Chinese New Year! Lunar New Year 2024, occurring on February 10, welcomes the fortunate Year of the Wood Dragon. In the Chinese zodiac, dragons symbolize robust leadership qualities and a determined spirit for success, encouraging us to pursue our dreams. While Dragons may have a quick temper, they value straightforwardness and thrive when surrounded by those who challenge their beliefs, fostering personal growth and initiating fresh starts in relationships. This year, the Wood element prompts us to actively pursue positive changes, much like the towering trees in a forest. Additionally, 2024 is known as the Green Dragon year, symbolizing expansion and strength, inspiring us to reach new heights and attain personal power.
I'm thrilled to share my daughter's unique perspective on our family traditions growing up during Chinese New Year. 🐉🌳
“I come from a big family where we loved and enjoying the Chinese dishes lovingly prepared by my grandfather, who comes from a province called Hubei. During the new year, his house would be filled with the delicious smells of his cooking while the parents enjoyed catching up and us cousins were playing games together. As kids, we couldn't wait for the red envelopes adding to the excitement of the festivities. Perhaps to our parents’ dismay, we couldn't resist emulating our family's penchant for a little friendly gambling. So, we'd wager our red envelope money in card games, and let’s just say some of us walked away with a little bit more than others. With my parents, aunts and uncles, and many grandkids all roughly the same age, our gatherings were bustling with laughter and good times. But amidst the chaos, my grandfather always managed to bring us together for a lovely family meal. I can still remember the aromas of his steamed fish with scallion, the comforting taste of lotus root soup, the crispy Peking duck, and the perfectly cooked fried rice that completed our meal. Sitting together at the table with our loved ones, we shared more than just a meal we shared precious moments of family ties and traditions that still mean the world to me.”
