🏡 Explore the Historic 2-Story Houses of Glencoe Mill Village 🕰️
Discover the character and heritage of Glencoe through its iconic 2-story houses. These homes are the cornerstone of the village, with a classic layout featuring 2 rooms upstairs and downstairs, connected by a central hall. Crafted with precision, they boast heavy timber construction, brick nogging, and beautifully plastered interior surfaces.
What's brick nogging, you ask? It's a clever construction technique using soft bricks to fill walls, ensuring stability and keeping rodents and pests at bay. 🐭
As you explore the village, you'll notice these houses were often built in small clusters, each with unique features. Some have variations in stair dimensions, while others display elegant Greek Revival returns on the gable ends. These architectural nuances might reflect the work of different builders, adding layers to Glencoe's history.
Behind each house, you'll find detached kitchens and privies, offering a glimpse into daily life. Remarkably, five of these detached kitchens still stand, many now attached to the original houses. Kitchen "ells," added after 1900, showcase the village's adaptability and commitment to preservation.
These 2-story houses are living history, telling the stories of generations past. Join us in preserving their legacy and celebrating Glencoe's rich history. 🏡🌟
