Police Officer Terry L. Bennett passed away at 32 years old on January 7, 2026 in Washington, D.C. He served with the Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. for over 7 years. Officer Bennett joined in February 2018 and was assigned to the First District after graduating from the Metropolitan Police Academy. He was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Ballou Senior High School and later returned to coach football there. He also graduated from Bucknell University.
Officer Bennett passed away from injuries sustained on December 23 2025 while helping a stranded motorist on I-695. He was more than just a police officer. He created positive change in the lives of many, especially for the youth. Terry earned recognition as Officer of the Month and lived by his personal motto "Watch me shine."
In honor of his life and service, the D.C. Council declared July 21, the anniversary of his birth, as Terry Bennett Day in Washington, D.C. The recognition was made through the Terry Lamont Bennett Recognition Resolution of 2026. He is survived by his wife Nadia Bennett and their son Elijah. On January 9, 2026, Nadia created a GoFundMe called "Support Elijah's Future in Honor of Terry." And so far, nearly $100,000 was donated by the community to support his son's future.
In a statement, Nadia said, "Though Terry is no longer here physically, his love, values, and legacy will continue to live on through our son." He will be deeply missed by his loved ones, fellow officers, and all who knew him. Rest in peace Officer Terry L. Bennett. Badge No. 5631. You did an exceptional job.
