Labor Day fell on September 7th in 1942 — the same date it falls on this year.

That morning, on the other side of the world, organized Japanese resistance ended at Milne Bay in New Guinea. Australian and American forces had held the airstrips there for nearly two weeks against an amphibious landing. It was the first time Japanese forces had been defeated on land in the Second World War, and it broke the belief that they could not be stopped.

At home, there were almost no parades that year. Mu*****ns plants ran straight through the holiday and workers gave up the day off to keep production moving. What happened abroad was not possible without the strength and the labor of the people who stayed on the line here.

In the photograph is my grandfather, Frank J. Klein, Sr., who served in the Navy in the Pacific during WWII. Today, September 7th, 2026, Walnut Creek Realty acknowledges and humbly thanks the generations before us.
