Very useful for planning your Summer projects. You may not need a permit from the City. Check to see where you are located!
Before starting your next home improvement project, please check to see if a permit is required! Information and applications can be found online at www.cityofbyron.com.
When is a building permit required for residential construction?
A building permit is required any time any structural member is installed, altered, removed or re- supported. This means if it supports anything, a permit would be required. A permit is also required for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC alterations, etc.
BUT FIRST! Before submitting a permit application to the city, please make sure you live in the city limits! There are approximately 15,000 residents that have a Byron address, but only about 4,000 of those residents are within the limits of the City of Byron (see ward map below). For example, the following subdivisions are not in city limits: Woodgate, Auker Estates, Deerfield Estates, Byron Hills, Northern Heights, Twin Oaks, Casio Crest, Barker Ridge, Country View Estates, Open View Estates, Adam’s Pointe, Settler’s Cove, Nordic Woods, Walden Valley, and Rock River Terrace. In addition, there are many homes not located within a subdivision that are outside of the city. All homes outside of the city limits are under the jurisdiction of Ogle County. Questions can be directed to the Ogle County Planning and Zoning Department at (815) 732-1190.
Still not sure if you are within the city limits? You may also check your tax bill. If you live in the city, you will see the City of Byron listed last under taxing districts.
If you have any questions, please contact Larry Hewitt, City of Byron Building and Zoning Director, at 815-234-2762. Completed building permit applications and payments can be dropped off at City Hall, mailed to the City of Byron at P.O. Box 916, or emailed to [email protected].
