🌲 Quick Facts About Northern Wisconsin's Elk
Historic Reintroduction: Native eastern elk vanished from Wisconsin in the late 1800s due to overhunting and habitat loss. In 1995, 25 Rocky Mountain elk were brought from Michigan to Clam Lake, WI, restoring the species to the Northwoods.

Growing Population: The Northern Elk Herd, centered around the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Clam Lake ("The Elk Capital of Wisconsin"), now numbers nearly 400 animals.

Vocal Communicators: During the fall mating season (the "rut"), mature bull elk produce a loud, high-pitched call known as a bugle that can echo up to several miles through the forest.

Massive Antlers: Bull elk drop and regrow their antlers every year! Grown during the spring and summer at a rate of up to an inch a day, a fully grown rack can weigh up to 40 pounds.

Starting from the Star Route parking lot, this 8-mile trail network takes you through lush second-growth forests, open meadows, and down into a valley where towering cedars, pines, maples, and birches flank Pikes Creek.

Trail Highlights:

📍 Distance & Route: 1.5-mile round trip from the trailhead to the Pikes Creek bridge (with 8 miles total to explore!).

🥾 Difficulty: Average (well-maintained, but watch for a steep hill into the creek valley and occasional muddy spots).

🐦 Birding Haven: Keep your eyes and ears open along the creek for warblers, Winter Wrens, thrushes, and Spotted Sandpipers. In the parking clearing, spot Indigo Buntings, Hummingbirds, and Cedar Waxwings.

🚗 Amenities: Free parking, pit toilet, and a picnic table at the trailhead.

📍 Directions: From Bayfield, head south on Hwy 13, turn right on Cty Hwy J (1.3 mi), go straight on Star Route Rd (2.3 mi), and look for the brown "hiker" sign on your left.

Natural "Antifreeze": Hatchlings can actually freeze solid during cold winters and survive! Their bodies produce a natural antifreeze compound (glucose and glycerol) that protects their organs when temperatures plunge below freezing.

Basking Experts: As cold-blooded reptiles, they rely on sunny days to warm their bodies and kickstart their digestion. A sunlit log in a quiet bay is their favorite spot.

Winter Underwater Sleep: During cold Wisconsin winters, adults bury themselves in the mud at the bottom of frozen lakes and ponds, absorbing oxygen through their skin to survive until spring!
