With the seasons changing and all this rain we've been getting it's time to start thinking about how we're going to get our warm season grasses through the winter. We should expect to see a burst of growth in the next couple of weeks. The best thing that we can do is allow our grass to get up to the 6" mark. The longer the shoots (stems and leaves), the longer the roots. The grasses will need long roots as they go into dormancy. These long roots will allow the plants to store as much energy as possible through the winter and give them the best opportunity to produce as many shoots as possible in the spring, establishing a strong turf early. So, let your grass get nice and tall and then maintain it at the 6" mark with frequent mowings until it turns yellow for the winter. Then, mow less frequently or as needed to control cold season plants.
