🪵 | Why Do Some Log Homes Turn Black?

Have you ever driven by a log home and noticed the exterior turning dark brown or even black?

Almost without fail, one common culprit is a stain containing linseed oil. Since linseed oil is organic, certain varieties of mold fungi thrive on it and, over time, can dramatically darken the appearance of your logs.

💡 Here’s a quick clue:
If the dark areas are the same color even in spots protected from direct sunlight, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with mold growth rather than UV damage.

The good news? There are ways to address it and restore the appearance of your wood.

: Demolition by Neglect

Demolition by neglect occurs when a property owner—either through inaction or intent—fails to maintain a historic structure, leading to severe disrepair. Over time, exposure to the elements, structural instability, and lack of upkeep make the building unsafe, creating justification for demolition. This practice is often used as a loophole to bypass preservation regulations, allowing owners to clear a site for redevelopment without having to go through the legal process of seeking a demolition permit.

Numerous competitive Historic Preservation Fund grants from the National Park Service (NPS) are presently accepting applications:

1. Save America's Treasures
2. History of Equal Rights
3. Underrepresented Communities
4. African American Civil Rights
5. Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization
6. Tribal Heritage
7. Semiquincentennial
8. Historically Black Colleges & Universities

Each grant program has its own application, requirements an deadline, but in the past some of these programs have funded historic preservation planning work, historic designation efforts, and some bricks-and-mortal rehabilitation and repairs. Photo of fancy brickwork for emphasis!

As always, Federal funding for grants awarded from the Historic Preservation Fund is derived from Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas lease revenue, not tax dollars.
