When we scheduled this week's Faces and Places interview, we planned to sit down with Ficklin Bryant himself.

Instead, after his passing on May 3, his daughters Lauren and Holly shared the story of a man whose creativity touched nearly every corner of the Northern Neck—from his upholstery shop and Golf-a-Rama to the Christmas displays that became local tradition.

More importantly, they shared the story of a man who had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and important.

In this month's issue of Cooperative Living, members can read about the legacy of service Jacob Mothershead and his family have built. Jacob grew up watching his dad respond to emergency calls with Richmond County Volunteer Fire Department and his grandfathers, J.D. Dawson and Fred Wayne Mothershead, each served as volunteers for more than 50 years with RCVFD.

Jacob has always known and seen the importance of giving back to his community, driving him to become a volunteer firefighter and a lineman. NNEC is thankful for the ways Jacob and his family continue to serve their community and for taking the time to share their story.

Long before healthcare facilities filled the Northern Neck, Catherine Courtney saw the need for something even more important: well-trained, compassionate nurses rooted in their community.

For 30 years, she helped build and lead RCC’s nursing program, helping shape the future of healthcare across the Northern Neck one student at a time. Many still remember her not only as a teacher, but as someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves.

Today, her legacy lives on through the generations of nurses she taught, encouraged, and inspired.
