"The tongue of a giraffe can reach lengths of up to 50 cm (19 in) and is used to grab leaves and pull them off thorny branches. The tongue is also long enough to enable the giraffe to clean its own ears. It is believed that the bluish black colour of the tongue is there to protect it from getting a sunburn. After all, the tongue does spend a lot of time in the sunshine, extended far outside the mouth while feeding."
