This is Swallow Wort, which is both noxious and obnoxious, and insidiously invasive. Once you notice it, you see it everywhere. It is on the march and taking over. It loves to skulk along fences and to hide among flowers. It tempts Monarch butterflies to lay eggs, but kills the larvae. This tiny specimen from my garden shows how deep the roots system go. The plant grows into a substantial creeper and develops cylindrical pointed pods which ripen and explode into cottony seeds which blow all over the place. If you pull Swallow Wort out, do not put it into compost because it will survive... like a zombie re-emerging from a swamp. They have to be burned or go into a garbage stream that will not be recycled. Can you tell I don't like this plant?
