A fire on Irvington Street in 1904 took the Harcourt Studios and most of what Boston's painters had made in them. Within three months the Copley Society and the St. Botolph Club had raised ninety thousand dollars, and the land was donated.

Then they asked the painters what they needed. North light came first. Space, location and rent came after it, in that order.

Parker and Thomas built to that order. All forty-six studios face north, under windows twelve feet high. Every other exposure would have moved on them, the sun crossing east to west, the shadows travelling, the colour going warm by afternoon. North light holds. A canvas left half finished is the same canvas tomorrow.

The artists bought the building themselves in 1982, and painters work there still.

Fenway Studios is the oldest continuously functioning building in the country built for artists, and dedicated to nothing else since.

158 West Canton Street sits between Warren Avenue and Tremont, where the bow front looks east down Montgomery Street.

The kitchen takes the parlor level, open to the dining space and to the living area at the bow, with a private deck behind a wall of glass. Three fireplaces. Tall ceilings.

The primary holds the second floor, with a five-piece bath and two walk-in dressing rooms. Three more bedrooms and two baths on the floor above, and a second laundry with them.

There are thirteen seats at the corner of Brattle Street in Harvard Square, in a storefront that until recently was two.

About Thyme will be the first kitchen in decades in the Square cooking specifically Lebanese food. The bread comes off a saj, a domed metal griddle heated from underneath, the way flatbread has been made in Lebanon for centuries. The dough goes on thin and comes off in about a minute. Sumac chicken, kafta, labneh with za'atar and pistachios. The wraps are most of the menu, and that is on purpose.

Three of its neighbors opened in the last three years, all of them outposts of businesses from somewhere else. This one starts here.

394 Hammond Street sits well back from the road on nine-tenths of an acre in Olde Chestnut Hill, where it has stood since about 1880.

A formal foyer opens on a grand staircase. Past it, a double parlor and a banquet-sized dining room, four fireplaces, reclaimed hardwood, and an eat-in kitchen that looks over the back yard. A covered loggia off the back.

The primary takes the second floor with its own bath and study. More bedrooms on the floor above, and the laundry with them.

The brownstone on a Back Bay front is Connecticut River valley sandstone, and it came out of two districts: Portland, Connecticut, across the river from Middletown, and East Longmeadow, at the Massachusetts end of the same redbeds. East Longmeadow was cutting at full capacity by the time the railroad reached it in 1876, the decade Back Bay went up.

Both are closed. The Massachusetts quarries went quiet in the early twentieth century. Portland flooded in the record high water of 1936, and again in the hurricane of 1938, and never drained.
A small operation reopened there in 1994 to cut stone for restoration work only. It ran until 2012.

So when a bow front spalls, there are three ways out. Patch it with a tinted compound and accept that it will never quite match. Find salvage, which means some other building came down. Or draw from a stockpile somebody had the foresight to buy years ago.

This is the part of a nineteenth-century facade that never appears in a listing. The supply is closed. Every square foot still standing is the last of it.
