A new study shows your neighborhood grocery store might say a lot about home values 🏡

Areas where Trader Joe’s opens tend to see home prices rise about 6% above the national average over the next few years, while neighborhoods with new Walmart stores often see prices underperform by about 4%.

But it’s not that the stores cause prices to change—experts say these companies are just really good at choosing locations. Trader Joe’s and similar chains target growing, higher-income areas, while Walmart often opens in places where prices are already struggling.

Bottom line: The type of grocery store nearby can be a clue about a neighborhood’s economic trajectory—not the reason for it.
