“That offer is insulting. I’m not even responding.”

A low offer can feel that way. But an opening number doesn’t tell us everything about where a buyer might finish.

My advice? Consider countering with a price and terms you can agree to. You don’t have to split the difference or make concessions just because someone asked.

A counter gives the buyer something concrete to consider—and creates an opportunity to see whether an agreement is possible.

Here’s the caution: sending a formal counteroffer rejects the original offer—even if you change only one term. That offer is no longer available for you to accept, and the buyer does not have to continue negotiating. Returning to the original terms would require a new agreement.

This applies whether you’re far apart or nearly in agreement.

When a solid offer already gets you almost everything you want, weigh the potential gain against the risk of losing it.

Your next move should serve your goals, even when the first offer tests your patience.
