50 minutes from Tater Hill HikeAway and worth the drive!
There is a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway where the mountains stop being scenery and start being weather. ⛰️
Craggy Gardens sits around 5,500 feet north of Asheville, high enough that the trees give up and hand the ridge over to wind stunted heath and thickets of Catawba rhododendron. In mid June those slopes go so purple it looks unreal in photos. The rest of the year the draw is the fog, which fills the valleys below until you are standing over a white ocean with blue ridges poking through like islands.
Getting there for sunrise means a dark drive, a cold jacket in July, and a parking area that will be nearly empty. Then the sun clears the far ridge, the fog underneath turns peach, and everybody who made the effort just stands there not saying much.
The Parkway has plenty of famous overlooks, but Craggy has a way of humbling people. 🌫️ Fifteen minutes on that trail and the week you were having stops mattering. What is your favorite overlook on the Parkway, and what time of day do you go?
