​If you’ve been driving around Canyon Lake lately, you’ve probably noticed some incredibly cute new neighbors. Mother deer are officially hiding their newborn fawns in high grass, brush, and even neighborhood yards to keep them safe from predators.

​Because our local deer population lives so close to us, it’s incredibly important to know what to do if you spot a baby deer alone:

​🔹 Leave them be: A fawn bedding down alone is completely normal! Mother deer purposely leave their babies hidden for hours at a time while they forage for food so they don't draw attention to them.

🔹 Don't touch: Fawns are born with virtually no scent, which is their primary defense against predators. Touching them can transfer human scent and put them at risk.

🔹 Watch your pets: Keep dogs on a leash and check your yard before letting them out during these early summer months.

🔹 Drive carefully: Deer are fiercely protective right now, and older fawns will soon start following their moms across our local roads.
