Avalon Management Goes Above and Beyond for Profound Change
They say it takes a village to get something done. But, first, it starts with an individual or group of people who can rally the other members to work together for a common cause. In this case, it all started when the Association received notice that a convicted, violent s*xual offender was going to be released into a community of approximately 9,000 seniors.
While originally being told there was little anyone could do to prevent this from happening, Sun City Civic Association’s General Manager, Norma Zermeno, PCAM® of Avalon Management, sprung into action to begin what became the largest opposition ever in the California County of Riverside.
Working with Sun City Civic Association’s Board President Brian Holley and using Avalon Management’s technology to notify the residents through the community website, email blasts, and mobile app push notifications, the word got out about the s*x offender as a potential new neighbor.
Not stopping there, the management team and Board reached out to all local government agencies, news media outlets, and residents to hold standing room only town hall meetings. Some of those meetings, held at the Association’s facilities, were hosted by the Menifee Police Department and attended by Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin and several members of his staff as well as local news outlets. Hestrin even encouraged concerned residents to file an affidavit with his office, and the Association assisted in the distribution of a separate petition and collection of the affidavits.
Avalon Management staff and Board President Brian Holley were present at the court hearing on July 29th in which it was determined convicted s*x offender Lawrence Phillip Moff will not be placed in the community located in the city of Menifee. The convict’s attorneys agreed the community was not a proper location for him to be placed. Managing Deputy District Attorney Daima Calhoun provided a compelling case against this placement and protected the community.

Now, it will be decided another day where he will live. Unfortunately, whoever that community is will have to band together to protect their families and children.
However, this is a great example of the achievements that can be made with proactive management and a supportive, participatory Board as well as how community members can work together on a shared objective to take control, protect each other, and deliver positive results.
I am super proud of all of my staff that helped this community avoid an uncertain future.
