Family and Friends be Safe!
I see a lot of posts of people not knowing how to prepare.
Here are 20 ideas to help you prepare effectively:
1. Create an Emergency Plan
• Make a detailed plan for what you and your family will do before, during, and after the hurricane. Include communication strategies and evacuation routes.
2. Build an Emergency Kit
• Stock up on essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and prescription medications for at least 72 hours.
3. Stay Informed
• Monitor weather updates through reliable sources like the National Weather Service, local news, or weather apps.
4. Secure Important Documents
• Place birth certificates, insurance policies, IDs, and other important documents in a waterproof container or digitally back them up.
5. Prepare Your Home
• Secure outdoor items like patio furniture, trash cans, and garden tools to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
• Board up windows with plywood or install storm shutters.
6. Trim Trees and Shrubs
• Reduce the risk of falling branches by trimming trees and bushes around your home.
7. Install Surge Protectors
• Protect electrical appliances by installing surge protectors to prevent power surges during the storm.
8. Review Your Insurance Policy
• Ensure that your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers hurricane damage and flooding.
9. Evacuation Planning
• Know your evacuation zone and have multiple routes planned out. Familiarize yourself with shelters in your area.
10. Backup Power Supply
• Consider purchasing a portable generator or battery-powered backup system to keep essential electronics running in case of a power outage.
11. Fuel Your Vehicles
• Fill up gas tanks and keep your car ready for a potential evacuation. Gas stations may run out of fuel or close during hurricanes.
12. Prepare for Flooding
• Place sandbags around vulnerable entry points of your home to mitigate flooding. Elevate valuables off the floor.
13. Protect Pets
• Plan for your pets by packing food, water, and supplies. Have a safe place or shelter for them.
14. Have Cash on Hand
• ATMs and credit card machines may not work if the power goes out, so keep some cash available.
15. Prepare a Communication Plan
• Make sure your family knows how to contact each other if separated. Have a list of emergency contacts ready.
16. Charge Electronics
• Fully charge phones, power banks, and other essential devices before the hurricane hits.
17. Move Furniture and Appliances
• If you’re expecting flooding, move furniture and electrical appliances to higher floors or elevate them with blocks.
18. Install Hurricane Straps
• Strengthen your roof by installing hurricane straps or clips to minimize the risk of it being blown off.
19. Turn Off Utilities
• Know how to shut off your home’s utilities (gas, electricity, water) in case of an emergency.
20. Stay Indoors During the Storm
• Stay away from windows and doors. Shelter in a windowless room or a safe spot in the house during the storm.
By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property in the event of a hurricane.
