Why book direct through the host and skip the major booking sites such as AirBnB?!
Here are some surprising “Did you know?” facts about Airbnb charges:
💰 DYK Airbnb’s guest service fee can add hundreds of dollars? Under its split-fee structure, Airbnb lists guest fees generally ranging from 14.1%–16.5%. On a $2,000 booking subtotal, that’s $282–$330 in service fees alone, before taxes. Rates can vary.
🧹 DYK Airbnb calculates its guest service fee on the cleaning fee, too? The percentage applies to the nightly charges plus additional host fees. A $200 cleaning fee could therefore add another $28.20–$33 in Airbnb service fees under that structure.
🏠 DYK your host doesn’t receive Airbnb’s guest service fee? Under split pricing, Airbnb charges the guest a service fee and also deducts a separate fee from the host’s payout—usually 3%.
🚫 DYK you could lose the cleaning fee even if you never enter the property? If you cancel outside the free cancellation window, the cleaning fee’s refund follows the host’s cancellation policy.
↩️ DYK a partial accommodation refund doesn’t necessarily return Airbnb’s service fee? Airbnb says that fee is refundable within the free cancellation period or when the host refunds you in full after cancellation, with some regional exceptions.
💱 DYK paying in a different currency can increase Airbnb’s service fee? Cross-currency bookings can include an additional amount within the guest service fee. Your bank may also charge its own international transaction fee.
