Ho’okena beach is roughly 15-20 mins from the house. It has good sand (volcanic), reef, turtles and usually spinner dolphins. It also has restrooms and fresh water showers for rinsing off the sand.

Parking is limited

No chasing the dolphins or turtles. But you can paddle out towards them and they usually swim by and say high. Grab a red leaf from the tree and they’ll sometimes play with it with you.

Punalu’u bakery is about 30 mins from the house heading towards Volcano and Balck sand beach. They have the best malasadas (donuts) on the island. They’re sweet bread makes the best french toast.

There’s great things to see in Hilo but it’s about a 2 hour drive ONE WAY. We call this day the “run.” Because we maximize our stops and see everything!

Akaka falls

Once you’ve reached Akaka falls you can either double back around the belt road or take the saddle over. If you tale the saddle you should highly consider stopping at the Muana kea peak. The mt peak is at 13,802. There’s a vistor probable around 12-12,500 that they make you stop and acclimate to limit hypoxia. If you don’t feel like going through all of that there’s a little hill you can hike to just shy of the visitors center that offers great sunset views.
