More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, a number expected to grow. While most people understand that dementia affects memory, fewer recognize the difference between normal age-related changes and early signs of a progressive condition like Alzheimer’s disease.

Below are nine common signs of early-stage dementia:

🗣 Changes in speaking habits – Repetitive “loop” conversations, very brief responses, or difficulty following dialogue

🍽 Changes in eating habits or diet – Expired food in the refrigerator, repeated purchases of the same items, missed meals, weight loss, or preference for sweets

📬 Unpaid bills and unopened mail – Stacks of mail, newspapers, or magazines accumulating

💊 Missed medications – Uncertainty about whether medications were taken, or pills remaining in daily organizers

💈Changes in personal hygiene – Forgetting to change clothes, wearing unclean clothing, or appearing unkempt, such as uncombed hair

🚗 Difficulty with driving or navigation – Getting lost in familiar places, new dents or scrapes on the car, or confusion with directions

🚫 Missed or canceled appointments – Withdrawing from regular social activities

🌚 Increased withdrawal or isolation - Keeping blinds closed for long periods, reduced engagement, or increased fear or suspicion

🧠 Mood or personality changes – Increased irritability, confusion, or agitation that is difficult to redirect

If your loved one is exhibiting several of these behaviors, consider scheduling a visit with their physician. While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, treatments are typically most effective when starting early and can help slow cognitive decline. Medications and alternative therapies may also help manage symptoms for a period of time.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and Sopris Lodge recently welcomed a full house for our “Responding to Dementia Behaviors” presentation in partnership with HomeCare & Hospice of the Valley.

Together, we explored how behavior is a powerful form of communication and often the primary way people living with Alzheimer’s and related dementia express their needs and feelings. Through interactive demonstrations, attendees learned strategies to decode behavioral messages, identify common triggers and respond effectively and compassionately to everyday caregiving challenges.

Thank you to Lisa Paige, Social Worker, Ben Germann, Nurse, and our Executive Director Marie Herr for leading the insightful session.

Sopris Lodge at Carbondale Senior Living is committed to supporting families, caregivers and residents through every stage of the dementia journey.
