60 Years of Bioengineering the Future of Humanity 🧬🔱
Sixty years ago, UC San Diego set out to prove that engineering and human biology belonged together. Today, the Shu Chien – Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering celebrates its 60th anniversary milestone!
What began in 1966 under the visionary leadership of pioneers like Y.C. Fung, Benjamin Zweifach, and Marcos Intaglietta has grown into a world-class powerhouse. From pioneering the fundamentals of biomechanics to today’s cutting-edge AI-driven therapeutic designs and tissue-engineered constructs, this department has consistently redefined what is possible in human health.
As an alum, it is incredibly inspiring to watch the Triton community continue to break boundaries, secure top national rankings, and mentor the next generation of global innovators at events like Bioengineering Day.
Here’s to six decades of transformative research, life-changing discoveries, and a legacy that will shape the future of medicine for generations to come.
