​Sixty years ago, UC San Diego set out to prove that engineering and human biology belonged together. Today, the Shu Chien – Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering celebrates its 60th anniversary milestone!

​What began in 1966 under the visionary leadership of pioneers like Y.C. Fung, Benjamin Zweifach, and Marcos Intaglietta has grown into a world-class powerhouse. From pioneering the fundamentals of biomechanics to today’s cutting-edge AI-driven therapeutic designs and tissue-engineered constructs, this department has consistently redefined what is possible in human health.

​As an alum, it is incredibly inspiring to watch the Triton community continue to break boundaries, secure top national rankings, and mentor the next generation of global innovators at events like Bioengineering Day.

​Here’s to six decades of transformative research, life-changing discoveries, and a legacy that will shape the future of medicine for generations to come.
