The Ethics of Virtue

Why do debates about morality in our culture often seem so fruitless? According to virtue ethicists this is because modern moral theory and social practice have detached discussions of right and wrong from their proper setting in human well-being and the good life. Drawing on more than two millennia of tradition stretching back to Plato and Aristotle, the ethics of virtue seeks a healing alternative to the shrill and interminable moral disagreements of contemporary life. Virtues are those qualities of character that enable human beings to act well in a variety of situations and develop an understanding of their individual and common goods through practice. We will read two recent classics in the field by leading moral philosophers of our time: Alasdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue (1981) and Philppa Foot’s Natural Goodness (2003).
