Over time, a sometimes wet crawl without a v***r barrier turns floor joist into saggy wet noodles. And allows mold to thrive. Adding "home-made" columns is a band-aid, not the permanent solution. This was common when gas was below $1/gallon. Now this is what foundation companies fix. Know what you are buying before you dive in.

If your smoke detectors are > 10yrs old, replace them. If they are < 10 yrs old, you may still not be as protected as you think you are. Educate yourself on the types of smoke detectors available (Photoelectric vs Ionization). Chances are, you only have 1 type in your home currently, when you really should have both.
