YOU ALWAYS TOOK THE LONG WAY THROUGH.
It wasn't the fastest way home.
That was kind of the point.
There was always that road—the one that curved through the trees, past an old fence and around places you'd driven by a hundred times.
Then September came, and little things started changing.
A few leaves along the shoulder.
Cooler air through the open window.
Just enough color in the trees to notice.
Maybe the radio was on. Maybe the windows were down. Maybe you simply weren't ready to pull into the driveway yet.
Funny how we remember roads that never really took us anywhere special.
