With all the rain we've had and more on the way this week, water intrusion is a major risk for homeowners. Taking a few minutes between storms to check these five areas can save you thousands in future repairs.
Here's what to look for:
1. Clear gutters and downspouts: 🧹
Clogged gutters can cause rainwater to overflow, pooling directly against your foundation or backing up under your roof shingles. Scoop out leaves and debris now so water can flow freely.
2. Extend downspouts outward: 🛠️
Ensure your downspouts drop water at least 3-5 feet away from your foundation. Affordable flexible extensions from the hardware store are a quick, highly effective fix!
3. Check the ground slope: 📐
Walk your perimeter and look for areas where dirt or mulch slopes toward the house. Water follows the path of least resistance. If you see pooling next to walls, pack it with extra dirt so the ground slopes downward away from the home.
4. Clear yard grates and french drains: 🍃
Check exterior storm grates, patio drains, and french drain exits. Wet leaves and lawn clippings quickly block these systems, causing water to back up into garages, basements, or low doorways.
5. Check window wells and door seals: 🚪
Clear out debris from below-grade window wells so the built-in drains can do their job. If you notice daylight under exterior doors, replace worn weatherstripping immediately to block driving rain.
