Five years ago, we made a big move—full of hope but also fear, sadness, and uncertainty—so my husband could join a small, family-owned start-up as an estimator, just after losing his father (and business partner) to brain cancer.
Fast forward to today: that little start-up has skyrocketed from $20 million to $200 million a year in revenue, launched a thriving commercial division, and now my husband leads a team of 16 estimators with plans to grow even more. They provide siding for countless large and small home builders and have tackled iconic projects like Raleigh Iron Works. They’re expanding their reach to nearby cities and states, too. And yes, he hears about all the new builds first!
But as amazing as the growth has been, the heart of this story is the strength of the people involved. When people ask how my husband is handling work while fighting cancer, it’s hard to fully express what he’s endured—or how remarkable the company has been through it all. The owner, Maggie, treats him like family, urging him to take care of himself first, to come and go as he pleases. (Fun fact: Maggie’s sister is that girl you’ve seen on the news rolling down a hill after the cheese wheel!) It’s rare to find a workplace that feels like family, but somehow we’ve done it twice both with Vanir and Caul Group.
Just this past week, his company took FIRST place out of 50 businesses in the Raleigh Business Journal’s Fastest Growing Companies awards—right here in the third-fastest-growing city in the nation.
If I could tell that scared, lost girl from five years ago where this journey would lead, I’d say, “Hold tight, you’re about to witness something incredible.” And I know his father, Danny, has been watching and guiding us all along, a reminder of his words: “Even if it’s not okay, everything is going to be okay.”
So proud of you, Josh Boyd. Your strength, hard work, and heart deserve every bit of recognition. Keep inspiring us all and making those homes for us to sell.
