Did you know the Northeast Cape Fear River was first charted by an English explorer more than 360 years ago?

In 1663, William Hilton and his crew traveled these waters, documenting the river, its landscape, and landmarks along the way. Among their observations were the steep banks streaked with white marl, an early written description of the white cliffs that would one day help inspire the name River Bluffs.

Some of the names tied to the exploration are still found on the map today, like Rocky Point, NC. Pretty amazing to think about just how much history has traveled along the river right in front of our community. 🌿
