❄️Keep your pipes warm during freezing weather ❄️
You've probably heard by now that we're expecting temperatures below zero in the next few days. Here are some tips from Castle Rock Water on how to keep your pipes from freezing.
The most susceptible water pipes are those that are in exterior walls of the home or crawl spaces. Keep these exposed areas warm by opening cabinet doors and crawl space openings.🌡️Keep thermostats set to at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit, even when leaving the house.
👀It is a misconception that letting a faucet drip will prevent pipes from freezing. Letting water drip is about releasing pressure and providing space for ice to expand without rupturing pipes. If you choose to do this, open the faucet that is the farthest away from the meter so the flow goes through the entire (warm) house.
If a pipe freezes, apply heat to it. A small space heater or blow dryer is recommended. It may take some time to get the heat to disperse through the plumbing system. 🫣Never use an open flame and have areas adequately ventilated.
🤔Know where your water shut-off valve is in case a pipe does burst. This valve is on the water meter which is usually located in the basement or crawl space on the wall nearest the street.
For homes with the meter in the front yard, the water shut-off valve should be inside the home, typically on the wall nearest the front yard. 🤨DO NOT attempt to access the meter pit. Opening the pit will allow cold air into the area, making the freezing issues worse.
