Sometimes, the right thing seems so wrong. This morning, our amazing friends and local general contractors, Ronnie Taylor from Taylor Construction and Scott Sykes from Silverhall LLC, did us the most incredible service. The old movie theatre building was long gone, with only the very rim of architectural line remaining. Underneath, the much loved Cedar Key mural, which we had personally paid several hundred dollars to have repaired after Idalia, had been mostly missing since Helene. Since the storm, the damage had gotten significantly worse, creating liability and safety hazards for the general public and for the adjoining buildings. We had hopes for salvaging it and making it a spectacular part of what happens in the future to that section of town. Sadly, after a thorough review by multiple contractors and a structural engineer, it was determined not to be something that could be saved. It was hard to hear but the multiple voices with over 200 years of experience between them were unanimous. It must come down. We appreciate all the interest in this piece of our project and can only say, there is more happening on this front than we can tell you right now. But your vocal support, physical presence and financial boost to support historic structures will be certainly needed in the weeks to come. These buildings need you all to speak up. There is so much more to come on that very soon! We look forward to sharing those details with you all and having you join us in the most complete historic preservation project this town has ever seen!
