❄️ Central Florida Freeze Alert: How to Prepare Your Home ❄️
With colder-than-usual temperatures heading our way, it’s a good time to take a few simple steps to help protect your home. Central Florida homes aren’t built for hard freezes, so a little preparation can go a long way.
🏠 PLUMBING PREP
• Insulate outdoor pipes, hose bibs/spigots, and backflow valves
• Disconnect and drain garden hoses
• Let indoor faucets drip slowly (hot & cold) during the coldest hours
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• Insulate pipes in garages or unheated areas
• If your home is vacant, keep the heat on (around 60°)
🌱 PLANTS & IRRIGATION
• Cover sensitive plants with sheets or blankets (avoid plastic if possible)
• Bring potted plants indoors when you can
• Turn off irrigation systems to prevent frozen lines
🐾 PETS & ANIMALS
• Bring pets indoors during freezing temperatures
• Check under hoods and wheel wells before starting vehicles — animals may seek warmth
🧊 AROUND THE HOUSE
• Bring aerosol cans, sodas, and liquids indoors to prevent bursting
⚠️ AFTER THE FREEZE
Most damage happens when water is turned back on. Restore water slowly and watch for leaks or pressure changes.
