Another incredible black woman we want to celebrate this month is Shirley Chisholm.
She was the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives. She was elected in 1968 and represented the state of New York.
She broke ground again four years later in 1972 when she was the first major party African American candidate and the first female candidate for president of the United States. Talk about some major girl power!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Another incredible black woman we want to celebrate this month is Dr. Patricia Bath. She was an ophthalmologist who invented the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment; in 1986, she became the first Black woman doctor to receive a medical patent. We love learning about rockstar women who are also leaders in science and technology fields!
Patricia Era Bath was born on November 4, 1942, in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood to Rupert Bath, the first Black motorman for the New York City subway system, and Gladys Bath, a housewife and domestic worker who used her salary to save money for her children’s education. Bath was encouraged to pursue academics and was given a chemistry set at an early age.
In her studies, Bath discovered that African Americans were twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients to which she attended, and eight times more likely to develop glaucoma. Her research led to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased the amount of eye care given to those who were unable to afford treatment.

Black History Month honors the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Among prominent figures are Madam C.J. Walker, who was the first U.S. woman to become a self-made millionaire. Madam C.J. Walker was born on a cotton plantation in Louisiana and became wealthy after inventing a line of African American hair care products. She established Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories and was also known for her philanthropy.
