National Adult Day Services Week starts today, and it highlights an option a lot of Colorado families don't know exists: adult day programs. These provide supervised care, meals, and activities during the day — while a parent still comes home every night.

For a parent who isn't ready for assisted living but can't safely be alone all day, this middle-ground option can buy a family real time: time to plan, save, and make the bigger decision without rushing it under pressure.

As National Assisted Living Week wraps up, here's the piece that gets lost in all the logistics: dignity isn't about where someone lives — it's about how much say they have in getting there.

Whenever possible, involving a parent in touring communities, choosing their room, or picking their own schedule preserves something crucial: the feeling that this is still their life, just in a safer setting. Colorado has a wide range of communities, and finding the right fit is as much about personality as it is about care level.

One question we get constantly during National Assisted Living Week: "Can the sale of Mom's house actually cover the cost of assisted living?" For many Colorado families, the answer is yes — home equity is often the single largest resource available to fund this next chapter.

The key is timing it right: understanding the local market, the true costs of assisted living (monthly fees vs. buy-in models), and how quickly funds are actually needed. A clear-eyed look at the numbers early on takes a lot of pressure off later.

"How do I even bring this up?" is the question we hear most from adult children starting to explore senior living for a parent — and it's one of the hardest conversations a family will ever have.

Healthy Aging Month is a good reminder that this conversation goes better when it starts early, calmly, and more than once. Try opening with curiosity instead of a decision already made: "What would make you feel most comfortable as things get harder?"
