The lights are back on at Central!

For the first time since 1986, the original post luminaires have returned to their rightful place atop the masonry entrance piers along Queen Street. And tonight, they will once again illuminate the grand entry—just as they first did in 1930.

Inside, the former Central School is being transformed into a one-of-a-kind mixed-use destination offering distinctive residences with historic character and modern comforts; two-story Live/Work Lofts that connect your professional space directly with your home; and destination offices for businesses seeking more than four walls and an address.

Come see more of the transformation taking place inside. Our doors will be open tomorrow, Saturday, July 18, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tours will begin next door at the Rose Rent Lofts common rooms at 57 South Third Street. Parking is available at the Trinity Episcopal Church lot on Harrison Avenue.

*Please note that our elevator is not yet operational, so stairs will be the order of the day.*

UPDATE - Please note that this Event is on Saturday, July 18th!

Looking forward to our next community tour on July 18th! In the interim, sharing a few of the goings on over the past week or so.

Even some of our Rose Rent residents are getting into the spirit.

Starting on the 4th floor, workers are bringing the wood floors, not walked on since June 1986, back to life in one of our model units. The replica lights have arrived, and the Queen Street porch will soon shine brightly into the night.

The former 3rd-floor balcony is being converted into lofted units while retaining the original curved ceiling and plaster ornamentation. A view of the green roof awaits its completion.

Meanwhile, the live/work units are taking shape on the second floor and in the former gymnasium.

The Borough of Chambersburg even jumped in - by reconstructing Harrison Avenue.

Meanwhile, the rich stonework of the first floor is being restored, and the last phase of work in the former locker rooms is underway, with the installation of underground utilities to serve the 5 residences on that level.

In the midst of all this, our first live/work and residential units have already gone under lease!

Sharing progress at Live & Work @ Central. New windows on the ground floor (former locker room areas slated to become one-bedroom residences). Street reconstruction at Harrison Avenue is underway; the four-story new "Central" stairway is nearing completion, while conversion of the upper 3rd-floor auditorium balcony moves forward.

Time to share a few updated photos of our progress at Live & Work. 3rd Floor just about complete, 2nd floor Live & Work residences in infilled gymnasium and upper balcony are progressing, ground floor of Auditorium awaits start of business commons, while ground floor (former locker rooms) are the last to follow as they become five additional one bedroom units.

March 1 Update from Live & Work!

Construction has been continuing over the winter at Live & Work.

More materials are being delivered on a foggy day.

Permanent power, meters, and a 5,400-volt transformer were installed along with fiber-optic trunk lines.

3rd-floor units are nearing completion, with painting and cabinetry being installed.

Auditorium balcony conversions are underway.

Elevator shaft and its 47' deep piston drilled and completed.

Second-floor residential quarters for the Live & Work units are receiving their interior windows.

Demolition of the ground-floor locker room is underway to accommodate five residential units.

As the Platinum Sponsor - Live & Work @ Central announced the opening of pre-leasing this week at the Franklin County Development Corporation's State of the Economy Luncheon this past Tuesday.

Vern McKissick, AIA, had the opportunity to address its 40th anniversary, which was well-attended, with several hundred representatives of business, industry, and local government present. Of the several topics addressed, the shortage of housing in the County & region was the first item discussed.
