There is talk in housing policy circles about ideas to make moving easier for homeowners who locked in low rates. One of those ideas is called a portable mortgage.

The concept is simple. You keep your current lower rate and transfer it when you buy your next home.

For example, someone who locked in a three percent rate in 2021 could bring that same rate into a move today instead of jumping into a much higher rate.

It is not available in the U.S. right now, but it is being discussed because it could help break the rate lock trap.
