When a basketball coach told her that his players were often hungry, REALTOR® and long-time referee Kelly Whelan had to step in. She learned that the kids had a dedicated coach and a lot of heart, but they attended a failing public school and most lived in poverty. Eight years ago, Kelly began by asking friends to help feed 40 athletes six days a week. Today, a group of 150 volunteers also donates uniforms, school supplies, shoes, a team van, and even funds an academic tutor. The result is that most seniors get college scholarships. “All I was setting out to do was feed these kids, but then all this happened. We have learned so much from each other.”
