On April 12, the Daniel Island Property Owners Association disclosed that a segment of the Waterfront Park trail will be inaccessible until an alternative route can be arranged. A meeting was scheduled for April 15, involving city officials, the property developer, the POA, and representatives from the Daniel Island Neighborhood to explore options for reopening the trail.
Mary Stuart Sutton, the POA's chief operations officer, emphasized in an email today, "Recognizing the significance of the trail system to both residents and visitors, we want to clarify that the POA did not initiate the trail closure. The section of the trail in question is not owned by the POA; rather, it was closed abruptly by the property developer last Friday afternoon with minimal notice to us. We are actively engaging with the developer and other stakeholders this week to swiftly address the situation and establish a timeline for resolution."
The announcement on April 12 explained that a portion of the trail, previously rerouted from Waterfront Park to Barfield Park, had been shut down due to ongoing construction. In a subsequent statement to residents on April 16, the POA acknowledged that temporary closures of the alternate trail may occur intermittently due to the active construction site. They assured residents of their commitment to coordinate with all parties involved to improve notification procedures for any future closures.
Residents first became aware of the closure of the temporary trail connecting Waterfront Park to Barfield Park on the morning of Friday, April 12, when attempting to use it. Later that day, the POA announced the closure of a segment of the Waterfront Park trail until a viable alternative could be arranged.
