In 1718, Blackbeard held Charleston hostage for a chest of medicine.

In mid-May, Blackbeard blocked the harbor with Queen Anne's Revenge and three smaller ships.

For a week, he took every ship that tried to pass, including one carrying councilman Samuel Wragg and his son William.

His crew was sick. His demand to Governor Robert Johnson: send medicine, or the hostages die. The governor paid, and the hostages came home stripped of their valuables and most of their clothes.

Within seven months, Blackbeard was dead, and his partner Stede Bonnet was hanged at White Point. A 1943 granite marker still stands in White Point Garden. Save this and go find it.

Flooding is happening now in parts of Charleston, and more rain is on the way.

Expect more showers and storms this afternoon and tonight, with a Flood Watch until 2 a.m. Sunday. Sunday high tides are around 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. If you parked in the free city garages, move your car out by 4 p.m. Sunday.

Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through standing water. 🚗
