Why is the porch on the side?

Charleston’s iconic piazzas are one of the city’s most recognizable architectural features, but their placement is about more than aesthetics. Built along the side of the Charleston single house, piazzas take advantage of coastal breezes, provide shade from the Lowcountry sun, and create a more private outdoor space.

In our latest blog, we take a closer look at the history and purpose behind this distinctly Charleston feature and explore how these homes were designed around the city’s climate, landscape, and narrow lots.

Some places in Charleston are beautiful. Others carry stories that are a little harder to forget. Built in 1802, the Old City Jail stood for more than 130 years, housing prisoners from across the Lowcountry until its closure in 1939. Its Gothic architecture, weathered walls, and imposing presence have made it one of the city’s most haunting landmarks.

But the history of the Old Jail goes far beyond its appearance. Behind its walls were those awaiting trial, debtors, Civil War prisoners, and some of Charleston’s most notorious criminals. The jail also became the final home of Lavinia Fisher, often remembered as America’s first female serial killer, who was executed nearby in 1820. Stories like hers have helped give the building the eerie reputation it carries today.

As Halloween approaches, the Old Jail feels especially fitting among Charleston’s historic streets. Its shadows, iron gates, and centuries of stories are a reminder that the city’s past is not always picturesque. Sometimes, the most fascinating history is found in the places that still leave you wondering what happened behind the walls.

South of Broad is one of Charleston’s most recognizable neighborhoods, but its character runs deeper than its beautiful homes and waterfront views. For centuries, this southern end of the peninsula has been shaped by Charleston’s evolving history, from its early role as a fortified waterfront to the residential neighborhood we know today. At the southernmost point, White Point Garden, originally known as “Oyster Point” or “White Point” for the bleached oyster shells that once covered the shoreline, became an important part of Charleston’s coastal defenses in the 1700s. The High Battery seawall was completed in the early 1800s, and White Point Garden opened as a public park in 1838.

The neighborhood’s history still shows up throughout its streets. South of Broad is home to centuries-old residences, distinctive Charleston piazzas, historic churches, and architectural details that reflect the city's many eras of development. During the Civil War, the waterfront once again served a military purpose, with Battery Ramsay and the King Street Battery located near White Point Garden. Today, the Battery and park remain defining landmarks, connecting the neighborhood’s present-day charm with its earlier role along Charleston Harbor.

That connection to the past has been carefully preserved. In 1931, Charleston established its Old and Historic District, centered largely around the lower peninsula, helping protect the architecture and streetscapes that continue to define South of Broad. Today, walking through the neighborhood offers a glimpse into centuries of Charleston history, from its waterfront defenses and historic public spaces to the homes and streets that have endured through generations.
