Most people aren't thinking about power outages impacting them because they don't have visible lines to their house. However, those are not the lines being referred to. Power lines are brought to you from a power source. Those lines are not buried. The 1 inch of ice they keep referring to on the news will weigh those lines down and cause them to snap which then causes massive power outages.

Remember snow is light and fluffy so 12 inches of snow is a better weather condition than 1 inch of ice because ice is heavy.

Another thing to note if you have a gas fireplace it typically has an electric starter. You'll need to open the bottom and put batteries in the battery pack if you plan to use it when the electricity is out.
