“You miss 100% of the shots you don't take” —Wayne Gretzky
I remember someone asked me once, “What would you do in this life if you knew that you couldn’t fail?” This really got me thinking. What would I do, if I knew whatever I did would be successful? What are some of my core desires and goals for this life—and what is currently standing in the way of them?
So often I think for many of us, fear is the one big thing that stands in the way. And boy do I get it, the actions we take in this life have consequences, and sometimes going out on a limb doesn’t necessarily bear fruit.
But what if you got to the end of your life and you looked back at all the things you wanted to do but didn’t, all the chances you could have taken to follow your dreams but you chose not to because you were afraid?
Which is scarier and more difficult: trying something that may fail, or going through life never having tried at all?
Recently someone rephrased the same question to me in a whole new way that really changed my life for the better... What is worth doing in this life, even if I fail? What is worth trying? What matters so much that you would risk the uncertainty of the unknown just to see if it did work out?
We only get this one chance at life. Fear of failure is scary, but the regret of never trying at all, I would argue, weighs even heavier.
What is worth doing to you? What is it that you really want to try?
