North Carolina is an "attorney state" meaning title companies operate based on the work and opinions of closing attorneys. An attorney's Preliminary Title Opinion will allow a title company to issue a title commitment while their Final Title Opinion after closing will allow for a title policy to be issued.

When a judgment is entered against the owner of a piece of real property, that judgment automatically constitutes a lien on the property that would need to be addressed at closing. These liens last for a period of 10 years from the time the judgment is entered.
