This home may have already found its new owners, but it’s a great reminder of something I tell my relocation clients all the time: you have options when it comes to where you call home in the Carolinas.

Many buyers explore South Carolina communities like Rock Hill, Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Lake Wylie, where property taxes can be lower while still keeping you within reach of Uptown Charlotte.

Living right in the heart of the city has its advantages, but it can also come at a premium. Looking just beyond Charlotte can open the door to more space, different price points and communities that may better fit the lifestyle you’re looking for.

That’s the beauty of relocating to the Carolinas. You aren’t limited to one city, one state or one type of lifestyle.

If you travel often, Charlotte Douglas International Airport should absolutely factor into where you choose to live.

For business travelers, airline employees, and international families who regularly travel home or welcome family from abroad, areas like Steele Creek and southwest Charlotte can offer convenient airport access without giving up the neighborhoods and amenities families are looking for.

But don’t just look at miles. Consider traffic patterns, access to I-485 and I-77, your daily work commute, school locations, and how often your family will actually be heading to the airport.

It’s one of those relocation details that can make a big difference in your family’s everyday life.

Relocating to Charlotte is exciting, but I know it can also come with a lot of unknowns.

Which neighborhood fits your family? What will your commute look like? Where are the right schools, activities, grocery stores, and communities that will make everyday life feel familiar?

A successful relocation starts weeks before the moving truck arrives.
Before you start packing, take time to plan for what your family will actually need once you get to Charlotte.

Start here:
• Research schools first. School assignments can vary by address, and families may also want to explore magnet, charter, private and preschool options before choosing a neighborhood.
• Map out your real commute. Steele Creek, Uptown, Ballantyne, Fort Mill and Lake Wylie may look close on a map, but traffic patterns can make a big difference in your daily routine.
• Understand the NC/SC decision. If you’re considering the southwest Charlotte area, you may have great options on both sides of the state line. Taxes, schools, vehicle registration and other everyday logistics can differ.
• Plan for your entire household. If parents, grandparents or extended family are moving together, think about bedroom layouts, accessibility, healthcare, transportation and proximity to the places everyone will use.
• Build your local support system early. Research doctors, childcare, grocery stores, places of worship, cultural communities and activities that will help Charlotte begin to feel familiar.

And if you’re relocating internationally, give yourself additional time for banking, documentation, establishing U.S. credit, transportation and understanding a home-buying process that may look very different from the one you know.

Don’t start your Charlotte move with boxes. Start with a plan for how your family wants to live once you get here.
